The AI coding assistant named Codex made by OpenAI has witnessed robust growth in its usage in India. As per OpenAI, there has been a 27 times increase in Codex's weekly active users since the beginning of 2026, while its daily interactions have been increased more than 20 times up till April.
As per Thomas Jeng, Head of Startups for Asia-Pacific at OpenAI, Codex is not just used by software developers, but also by the founders, researchers, students, business groups, and other professionals who are trying to make their work easier.
These figures were shared by OpenAI during Mumbai Tech Week. In terms of adoption of Codex, India is now ranked among the top five countries globally, while in terms of engagement of users, it is ranked among the top ten.
