Alibaba is planning to ban the use of Claude Code, the AI coding app of Anthropic by all its employees from July 10 onwards.

The company has identified Claude Code as high-risk software and has requested its employees to use its own AI coding assistant named Qoder.

Anthropic has already banned the access of Chinese firms and any other foreign firms associated with China to its AI products. However, some people in China have still been using Claude despite the restrictions using some sort of loopholes.

As reported by The Information, Anthropic had recently conducted an experiment with Claude which was capable of detecting the location of its users to find out if they belonged to China or any Chinese firm.According to Anthropic, these limitations imposed in March were part of the experiment aimed at limiting unauthorized reselling of their AI models and minimizing the danger of model distillation. In particular, according to Anthropic’s Thariq Shihipar, the company managed to design more sophisticated security system and was planning to lift these limitations anyway.

At the same time, the competition within the sphere of artificial intelligence increases with new powerful and inexpensive AI models coming from China. GLM-5.2 created by Beijing startup Z.ai attracted attention due to impressive coding abilities and capabilities of the AI agent. The performance of this Chinese model is comparable with top US models but the cost is significantly lower.

US restrictions of advanced AI models like Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 made many people interested in the Chinese AI models recently. However, just recently Anthropic announced that the US Department of Commerce lifted the export restrictions on both Claude Fable 5
