The AI start-up Anthropic is said to be working on developing its own AI chip and is in talks with Samsung regarding collaboration, as per The Information.
Reports had surfaced this year stating that Anthropic was planning to develop its own chips to cope up with the increasing need for AI hardware and the supply chain issues associated with that. Nonetheless, the company still has no concrete plans for the usage of the chip, its compatibility with the servers, and the performance it will entail.
The company said that it would continue using the chips from Google, Amazon, and Nvidia for its AI infrastructure.Currently, many AI firms are venturing into designing chips to enhance efficiency and become independent of Nvidia that dominates the market for AI chips.
OpenAI has recently launched its first AI inference chip called Jalapeno in collaboration with Broadcom. According to the firm, it provides improved performance with less energy consumption. Amazon too boasts of Trainium chips for AI training while Google expands its portfolio of Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) via its cloud services.
Samsung is already a significant player in the industry of AI hardware due to its semiconductor manufacturing arm as well as collaboration with firms such as Nvidia and Google among others.
